From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

I genuinely cannot thank Williams & Bell in Moreton enough for everything they did for our family when arranging our mum’s funeral.
From the very beginning, the care, dignity, respect and compassion shown to our mum and our whole family was absolutely exceptional.
I was incredibly emotional and, at times, very indecisive about certain things. I would change my mind, rethink things and worry about whether I was making the right decisions for Mum. Nothing was ever too much trouble. I was never rushed or made to feel like I was being a nuisance. Instead, they listened, reassured me and helped me make decisions when I was struggling to make them myself. Looking back now, I know they helped me make the right choices for Mum, and I will always be grateful for that.
Every single detail was handled with such care. From the order of service and the beautiful service cards, to helping us find the very best people, including the wonderful celebrant Abbie Rippon, nothing was overlooked.
Even the route they took with Mum was thought about. Bringing her home and then taking her on her final journey to her resting place meant so much to us. Those little details might not seem important to everyone, but when it is your mum, they mean absolutely everything.
Wendy and Hayley deserve a very special mention. Their compassion went far beyond simply doing their jobs. Hayley is an absolutely beautiful person. She sat and listened to me, let me cry, reassured me and genuinely cared. At one of the hardest times of my life, that kindness meant more than I can ever put into words.
The dignity and respect they showed our mum throughout was incredible. Knowing she was being looked after with such care when we could no longer look after her ourselves gave us enormous comfort.
What has touched me even more is that their care did not simply stop once the funeral was over. They have continued to keep in touch and check how I am doing. That, to me, says everything about the people they are.
Williams & Bell went above and beyond in every possible way. Yes, they are incredibly professional, but it is their kindness, compassion and genuine humanity that I will remember forever.
From the bottom of my heart, and from our whole family, thank you Wendy, Hayley and everyone at Williams & Bell for looking after our precious Mum and for helping us give her the beautiful send-off she so deserved.
You made one of the hardest times of our lives that little bit easier, and for that we will be forever grateful.
Carol and family ❤️
Absolutely outstanding service
At such a difficult and upsetting time they made us feel like their family from the moment we stepped through their door greeted by Hayley ( which is a house which makes things so much easier rather than a 'shop' ) helping us every step of the way whilst still being professional and courteous
Mums final journey was beautifully done and everyone who attended also noted what a fantastic job they did for our mum
Special thanks to Natasha ( head of prossession) and Gayle ( celebrist who portrayed our mum as everyone knew her -fantastic job ) who both stayed with us throughout the service helping and guiding us they where brilliant
